Rush Tickets – Documentary Helps Define What Rush is About

On its face, Rush just seems to be a rock band. But talk to fans and they’ll tell you it’s something more than that: it’s a cerebral head trip, a revolutionary outfit looking to experiment with rock, a group of storytellers, and yes, maybe even a group of guys who overreach when it comes to what rock can do.

A new documentary on the band’s meteoric rise and long banishment from the upper echelons of “cooler” rock acts seeks to help define just what it is that makes Rush—well, Rush. Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage features interviews with a number of well-known musicians, including Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Jack Black of Tenacious D and Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins.

In a recent article published in Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, it says that Corgan told the filmmakers Rush has always been a band that’s been hard to described to outsiders.

“In the documentary, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins makes the key point that no one has really explained what makes Rush Rush,” the article reads. “So many other classic-rock totems have been analyzed to death. But as Corgan says, someone needs to explain the essence of the band’s influence on generations of musicians and its (mostly male) fan base the world over.”

In truth, that defining quality might be something that only a certain few can ever truly understand. What’s known is that the people who do love Rush really love them. That might explain why the documentary has already earned some awards at American and Canadian film festivals. Audiences at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival recently ranked it number six in the festival’s list of Top 10 films. And not too long back, the Tribeca Film Festival awarded it with the Heineken Audience Award, given out to the festival’s biggest crowd pleaser.

Blabbermouth, a metal news site, noted the reaction of the Tribeca Film Festival executive director Nancy Schafer: “The best documentary films are just great stories with characters who jump off the screen, and that is certainly the case with ‘Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage’. An intimate but energetic portrayal of one of the most prolific rock bands, ‘Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage’ highlights the juxtaposition of music and film as an art form and we hope that RUSH fans and audiences around the world embrace the film the way Tribeca audiences have.”

Schafer may not have long to wait when it comes to general audiences sharing the sentiments of the TFF crowd. The film has attracted immense amounts of buzz, not least because Rush happens to be going out on tour this summer for the first time in years. They will be performing their “Motion Pictures” album from 1980 in its entirety, along with a few unreleased songs that are due to appear on an upcoming studio album.

How early should I stand in line to purchase student rush tickets for a Broadway show in New York?

I am interested in seeing Spring Awakening or In the Heights in early January.

If you’re going to TKTS, I suggest getting there before it opens. The line is pretty long, but moves quickly; however, the earlier you get there, the more options you have to choose from.

Also, I highly reccomend Spring Awakening. It’s a great show and it closes January 18th, so see it while you still can.

How can I buy discount tickets at the Colonial Theatre in Boston?

I want to see a show in March called Avenue Q. I can’t find any details about student rush tickets or other discounted tickets. I’d rather buy the tickets beforehand and I already know about the TKTS booth.

Simple answer – try the theater and they will tell you when the tickets will go on sale and if any student discounts apply at that time.

Both the MA and NH Colonial Theater websites did not have Avenue Q on their events schedule.
